Children may have Dyslexia or another learning disability if they have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Letter reversals when reading. (Such as "was/saw," "b/d," "p/q").
  • Letter reversals or omissions when writing.
  • Difficulty repeating what is said to them.
  • Poor handwriting or printing ability.
  • Poor drawing ability.
  • Reversing letters when spelling dictated words.
Difficulty comprehending written or spoken directions.
  • Difficulty understanding or remembering what is said to them.
  • Difficulty comprehending or remembering what they have just read.
  • Difficulty putting thoughts on paper.
  • If your student exhibits any of these signs, and you believe it may be due to Dyslexia, it is important to have your child tested as soon as possible. When Dyslexia is discovered at an early age, the symptoms can be treated more effectively than later. Dyslexia cannot be cured because it is a neurological disorder. However, training another part of the brain to take over the sound processing function has shown incredible success.   If you or your child suffers from Dyslexia, you may find that private instruction is the best and most effective resource. Three primary types of tutors are available to those in need of alternative instruction. The first are those available at a student’s school. These instructors are often free, can work with a student’s schedule, and may have a greater understanding of that student’s curriculum than tutors from outside sources. The second option is outside group learning centers. Here the instruction comes with a cost, but is available more frequently than onsite tutoring. The problem with group tutoring is that it is rarely geared to your student’s specific needs and learning speed. The last and most effective form of tutoring is one-on-one direct instruction. The student is paired with a specialist who is trained in methods that have been proven to be most effective to those suffering from Dyslexia. This method is always the most intensive and generally produces the most noticeable and lasting results.
